Military time is a way of telling time that is used by the military, emergency services, and other organisation that need a particularly precise way to keep track of time.
Military time is also referred to as 24-hour notation since instead of having a 12-hour clock with two periods such as "AM" and "PM", each day is split up into 24 hours. Military time does away with the confusion caused by having two sets of numbers for one day and uses a continuous count from 00:00 to 23:59. Instead of having 1:00 am which could be written as "01:00" for the first hour after midnight, military time uses "0100".
This can make it easier to differentiate between morning and evening hours when communicating quickly over the radio or other form of communication both within the organisation and with external entities. For example, 2800 military time means 8 pm or 20:00 in conventional terms - something very important when there could be an urgency to knowing what exact time it is.
Military time also has some other benefits such as not having any confusion caused by midday or midnight sections on a clock face where the same numbers can be used (for example 12 and 12). In addition, writing out times in military format can also help with translating local times for use overseas or between different countries, since converting from conventional AM/PM times to 24-hour notation would make it easier to work out the correct time difference rather than relying on relative terms.
